Yamaguchi Prefectural Archives

In April 1959 the Yamaguchi Prefectural Archives was established as the first archives in Japan. In addition to historical material previously preserved at the Prefectural Library and the Institute for the Compilation of Historical Material of Yamaguchi, a mass of material of the Choshu Government is stored at the request of the former governors, the Mori family. By putting all the material together, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Archives started as the specialized institution for the preservation and study of archives.
Since then, the archives collects and preserves prefectural documents and paleography belonging to old families, and makes them available for public use.
Moreover, it offers further information upon request and reissues fundamental documents of Yamaguchi Prefecture. The archives also offers study programs of ancient documents as well as holds exhibitions of historic material to expand people's opportunity to access old material.
